Halibut are a flat fish that are members of the flounder family-only larger. They live on the bottom of the ocean, generally in deep water and feed on virtually anything, including fish, squid, shrimp, and crabs, allowing them to reach such massive proportions.
Halibut do not give up easily and they put up quite a fight. But, it is sure worth it! A Ketchikan halibut fishing charter is sure to keep you busy. Catching your limit is a common occurrence during the peak of the season!
Unlike many other charters, we don’t use broomstick rods and trailer winches to target Halibut. I have heard too many times that “Halibut don’t fight”. Usually from people who fished the deep water and heavy currents of Central Alaska. Four or five pounds of weight and a broomstick rod will take the fun out of fishing for almost anything. We use super-strong lightweight jigging rods and Diawa 2-speed lever drags with 80 pound superbraid. This keeps our weight to a minimum (16 oz.) and allows for a blazing fast 6.2:1 retrieve rate when checking bait. It also allows you to feel every single bump or nibble, not to mention the head shakes!
Bella Misty Fishing Charters has years of experience catching these legendary fish. Let Captain Moore and the crew take you on one of Alaska’s greatest fishing adventures with a halibut fishing charter in the protected waters of Ketchikan, Alaska!
